Should You Only Post During High Traffic Times/Days?

There's a myth going around, that states you must only post during the high traffic times and days.
I used to work with someone who was so obsessed with statistics and what worked best for other people, but failed to figure out what worked best for him.
While there are proven high traffic times through out each day, does that mean that we absolutely have to ONLY post during those times?
Nope!
And here's why that's a load of bull:
If those times are so high traffic, then your information will inevitably get lost in the shuffle of
everyone else and
their mother trying to post.
Okay, that maaaay be a slight exaggeration, but you get the idea.
There are no 'golden' times to post. There might be better times for you to post based on your own personal experience.
But that's just it. While statistics and case studies can give us insight into how OTHER organizations succeeded, it won't necessarily be the right strategy for you.
So how do you find the right times to post for your biz?
1.
Experiment. Post at different times of the day, even in the evening & on the weekends, and see when your posts get the most responses. You'll find your sweet spot eventually.
2.
Search. Do a search on your target market and figure out when they're online. This can be done through searching Twitter, through using Google Alerts, through looking through forums and even through looking at your competition's online presence.
3.
Ask. Ask your audience when they're online. It never hurts to conduct your own surveys. You have a whole group of people who are dying to get involved with you, so why not let them just tell you when they're online the most?
4.
Don't. There are millions of people online at any given time of the day, so no matter when you post, you'll be reaching at least a few of those people. So work out times that work best for YOU and the people will learn when YOU post. Not the other way around.
No matter what anyone tries to tell you (even me) there are no RULES to social media, the best to find results is through a TON of experimenting.
So experiment, do your research and ask your peeps until you've buckled down with the right schedule for YOU.
Do you have a set schedule or do you just post with the flow?

I have thought about this. I think the only time that doesn’t really work well for my blog is in the middle of the night. I usually post in the morning though because I’m scheduling them in advance.

Hey Lindsey,
It sounds like you have a good schedule and because of that, your audience will know when you post and expect it.
Thanks for the comment!
I’ve never really put much thought into posting schedule. I just usually publish anything whenever I finish writing it up. Maybe I should start doing some research and finding out what’s best for my audience. Thanks for the great article, it gave me some ideas to run with !

Hi Jessica!
Doing a little research never hurts. =) Posting whenever you’ve published a new post isn’t necessarily a bad thing, there just might possibly be better times. But overall, if you’re getting some good engagement, don’t change a thing.

I was just (literally seconds ago) asking myself…”When is the right time to tweet?” I asked because I noticed not many people are “chatty” during the 9-12, 1-5, and 11pm-7am time frames. Although, I do recognize the difference between East/West coasts have their own pockets of activity.
At the same time, we do have access to tools like Hootsuite and Buffer, which help send messages at peak times.
Anywho, thanks for writing. Good topic!

Hey Damond!
Haha, I have awesome timing.
There is definitely lowered activity for certain demographics, but that doesn’t mean they’re YOUR demographics. I have one client who does super well on the weekends and another who does very poorly and it’s because they have two completely different messages with two completely different demographics.
Just something to think about.
Oh yes, Buffer and Hootsuite are amazing tools to help us post at peak times, especially when we’re not able to do so.

I truly agree of what lindsey says in her comment, thanks for sharing!

This is an awesome topic! I blog once daily and always pre-post the day before to go out at 8:30 am. My strategy is the one you mentioned: to hopefully get people to expect to see me in their inbox early every morning. I figure that this gives them all day to read my fabulous content
P However, since Im not completely sure about the “best time” to post or share, I try to share my daily posts a couple times a day on Twitter (once on every other platform), rewording my tweet to not annoy those who may have already seen it. So far it’s been alright – but mine is a new blog, so time will truly tell me my sweet spot I suppose!
Great topic and post Morgan! I had never really thought of using tools to determine posting strategies – great idea!

Hi Melissa,
It sounds like you have a solid plan! You’re solidifying a posting strategy so that others know exactly when you post. It works, actually! Because I know that when I get up each morning, you’ll have a brand new blog post.
Thank you!
Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for that Morgan! You’ve given me an indication that my posting strategy is working

Love the article! It is great advice. I have found that by being yourself, you will gain more success. You can’t pretend or force it. If you do what comes naturally, you come across more genuine and people want to learn more about you.

Depends on which niche you are working. If you are into some news type niche you should post about it asap. But in some niches it doesnt depend ont he timings so you can and post anytime as you should also target the Big G traffic

Another excellent article! My experiment with this is still going on. So far I couldn’t figure out what is the best time to post a new article. I very much agree with the last line of this post as you said to experiment because there’s no rule for it.

I have my daily post pre-written and scheduled to post automatically at 12:01a each day. That gets it online and I can see through stats programs that spiders and bots crawl the post all night long.
During the day I sporadically share the post throughout my various social networks so that gives it continuous online promotion. Since I started doing this my blog traffic has climbed five or six times what it was before.

Yeah sometimes you just gotta post when YOU feel like. There really are no ‘rules’.
Thanks for the comment, Sarah.
Hello,
Came here for something and saw something! Great post for Newbies like me. Amateur bloggers like me posts one per week, may be because haven’t selected the perfect Niche! Temptation to claim all possible things in quicker time and wanted to pull as many visitors as possible. Hence, most will fail!

Hi Sandesh,
Nothing wrong with only posting once a week, it doesn’t hurt you if you don’t do more.
Good luck with your blogging!
