The Growing Trend of People NOT Saying Thanks

I come up to you and say, "Hey, nice shirt!"
You say, "Thanks!"
But when I tweet you and say, "Hey, nice shirt!"
You...don't say anything.
What's up with that?
I've been seeing this "trend" more and more these days. It doesn't just happen with the 'big names', it happens with everyone.
I RT and reply A LOT on Twitter. When someone replies to me, I reply back. When someone RT's something of mine, I say thank you.
Take the common courtesies that you learned in your everyday life and use them in social media.
You know, there's so much noise out there in the social media space that when someone reaches out to another person to agree, disagree or voice their opinion in some way, take the time to respond. Because they don't HAVE to say anything at all!
Even if it's days later, say
something back.
When you talk to someone in the social media realm, whether on a Facebook status or a reply/RT on Twitter, think of it as if you're talking to that person in real life.
Would you completely ignore someone who came up to you in person and said, "Thank you for that awesome blog post the other day."
No, I doubt you would just ignore them. You would say, "Thank you!"
That's all it takes. Just 3 seconds to reach out and say, "Thank you!" Or "You're welcome!" Or anything to show recognition of the other person.
Social media is about being SOCIAL! So let's get back into the habit of saying 'thank you'.
What do you think?

Great article – Social media is indeed allll about being SOCIAL. A lot of people abandon their social habits in favor of using SM strictly for business purposes. Here’s to hoping people realize social media is best used when people conduct themselves as they would in person!
We can only hope, Lily!
Thanks for the comment!
I may be new to social marketing, but I have tried to take to say “Thank you” and “Your welcome” to people. It seems like such an easy thing to do, yet it is something that remarkably few take the time for.
Thanks for sharing, Morgan!
You said it perfectly, Grady, “It seems like such an easy thing to do, yet it is something that remarkably few take the time for.” It IS so easy, which confuses me why people don’t do more of it!
Thanks for the comment!!
Thanks for posting this, Morgan.
My pleasure, Kevin! Thanks for commenting!
Here’s the problem. People want things for free. Free online music, free newspapers, free photos… Why should they be thankful for things that don’t cost them anything?
Then there’s the issue of entitlement. Most people have forgotten to be thankful for the things they take for granted.
I think it’s time to rediscover the forgotten virtue of being grateful and appreciative. Don’t wait until Thanksgiving.
And please, can we add the word “please” to your list of words that are rapidly disappearing out of our vocabulary?
Thank you!
Totally agree with you, Paul!
And of course! Can’t forget to say ‘please’! In this scenario, though, I was specifically talking about saying thanks, since all we seem to do on social media is take take take. But even when we’re asking for something from someone else, it’s SO important to say ‘please’.
Thanks for the comment, Paul!
Great insight once again Paul. Yes, whether you are talking to someone face to face or interacting on social media sites with others it is proper etiquette to say “Thank You”. It takes so little time and effort to say it. People would be amazed on what kind of reaction they get by simply being friendly and appreciative, that’s why I am reinforcing now with my kids at an early age to teach them good manners, to always say thank you, but let’s also not forget that other impactful word, “please”. That one is even more powerful sometimes. Thank you Paul, and please keep up the excellent blogging!
Hi Patrick!
Actually, my name is Morgan.
But you have it right, it takes so little time and effort to click a button and say ‘thank you’. And yes, ‘please’ is just as powerful.

Thank you for this good tip for me, Morgan. Until now when human say, “Nice spacesuit, Astro.” I say, “I know!” Better to say, “Thank you,” even though humans not always aware of full life support features.

Hi Astro,
Haha, yes, even though we may not be aware, at least we can know we were appreciated.
