20 Reasons You Hate Twitter & What To Do About It

Twitter seems to be the one platform that I get the most complaints about. Nobody seems to know how to utilize it to their advantage.
And for good reason.
Here are just a few of the complaints that I hear:
1. The steam moves WAY too fast
2. There are a ton of bots
3. There are a ton of people who just self-promote all the time
4. You only have 140 characters
5. Finding people to follow can be a pain
6. There's too much gibberish
7. DM's are full of spam
8. Nobody is retweeting you
9. Too many quotes and no real conversation
10. Too many company's and not enough people
11. Your conversion is low or nonexistent
12. Can't find the time to tweet
13. Your numbers aren't raising fast enough
14. You're following everyone back, but nobody is engaging with you
15. Don't understand the twitter etiquette
16. Information overload
17. Don't know what to tweet about
18. Don't want to be labeled a "follower"
19. Unsure who to even follow
20. It's too hard.
These are all valid frustrations BUT with the right training, you, too, can become a master at Twitter.
I'll be releasing a video course that will cover every frustration posed above.
But for now, here are 10 ways in which you can improve your Twitter engagement:
1.
Can't find the time to tweet? I call B.S.! Look at your twitter stream 3 times a day for 10 minutes each. By doing this, you'll find people to start a conversation with, you'll find a few things to RT and hopefully you'll be able to reply to a few people that have tweeted you. In only 10 minutes, 3 times a day, you can keep active & engaged on Twitter.
2.
Don't worry about the numbers. Of course you should build up your numbers of people who are not only within your targeted market but also like to engage with others. You find these people by reading & sharing other people's blog posts. So it will take time to build up your following, but focus on engagement.
3.
If you think there are too many bots, you're right. But the great thing is, you can block & mark a spam within 2 seconds. So viola!
4.
Nobody is labeling you a follower. It's just the term used for Twitter. In fact, in time, you'll be labeled an influencer in your field, if you stick around and get as engaged as possible while giving valuable info.
5.
Don't even worry about those obsessive self-promoters. Don't follow them, don't engage with them, don't even look at 'em. Do your thang and don't worry about anyone else.
6.
Work those 140 characters like they're the last 140 characters you'll ever say. Be enticing, be engaging, be FUN! You have the knowledge, expertise and awesome personality, so get out there and say it with GUSTO!
7.
Twitter, and social media in general, has nothing to do with conversion. I'm probably going to get a lot of backlash for that statement, but it's so very true. Twitter is there to showoff your knowledge & to get engaged with those who are interested in what you have to say and vise versa. If they like your knowledge, they will feel confident in your skills to go to your site and hire you.
8.
Yes, the stream does move fast, but you don't have to catch every single tweet. One of the great things about Twitter is, people repeat their tweets, so chances are, you'll either see the tweet later or you'll see an even better tweet.
9.
You have no obligation to follow anyone back. If someone follows you and you're just not interested in following them back for one reason or another, then don't! There's no rule that says you have to follow everyone back. It's YOUR choice.
10.
If nobody is retweeting you, maybe you're the problem? We can all get caught up in promoting what we have to offer so sometimes we can forget that we need to share other people's stuff & engage with them before expecting anything in return. If nobody is retweeting your stuff, then it could be that you're not offering the right kind of valuable content or it could just be that you need to get out there a bit more and prove yourself first.
So there you have it.
The complaints & a few resolutions for you to ponder over.

Why, thank you, Melissa!
This course is going to be massive and I’m truly excited for it and glad you are, too.
Morgan, the #1 reason I hate twitter is everything is hashtags related to Justin Bieber or bad relationships dealing with college kids or some other demographic. In all reality, it does not seem like the same intelligent crowd that is over at Google Plus; would you agree?

Hi Jesse,
I don’t agree.
I find the same unintelligible people over on Google+ and every other network. I think you’re tangled up in the wrong Twitter crowd if that’s your take on it. There are so many intelligent people on Twitter and they’re not that hard to find. It just depends on how you’re locating them and who you’re targeting. I won’t lie, it can take a while to find that perfect group of people, but it’s definitely possible.
Hi Morgan
Some great tips here, I use Twitter and find if you use it correctly it can be a great plus for your business. Of course there are the bots but like you say they can be blocked.
I am slowly building up my followers and I enjoy engaging with them.
Have a great day

Hi Pauline,
You said it perfectly: as long as it’s used correctly. That’s very important to keep in mind because Twitter is a platform in which people can interpret using in their own way, but there are very specific ways in which to achieve goals on Twitter.
Thanks for the comment.
Hi Morgan,
How right you are about these complaints. I have some of them myself. For those of us who find Twitter complicated to use, there are also many who seem to have mastered it and are putting it to good use.
I know I just need more practice and maybe a few tutorials to watch and learn and by following your great tips, I’m sure we can handle Twitter more confidently.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Theresa,
I’m glad you mentioned needing a few tutorials to watch as I’m creating an awesome Twitter video series which I hope will help those who are struggling with Twitter to use it more effectively.
You are right, though, it does take a lot of practice, and patience, to deal with Twitter.
Thanks for the comment!
I need to get on my Twitter more often than I do. I don’t engage or reply much, and I occasionally retweet…but that’s it. I haven’t seen much benefit from my Twitter. I guess I could use a tutorial.

It sounds like you’re not getting much benefit because you’re struggling a bit on how to actually use Twitter, right? I think a tutorial can definitely help you.
Great article! Since I’m still in college I sometimes struggle to find time follow up with twitter. I’ve found that using mobile apps and also organizing the people that I’m following into lists based on what they tweet is helpful. Then I can just look at specific lists and reply to a few people in between classes/when I’m on the go.
I also love #7. People are often times so reluctant to join social media sites such as Twitter because they don’t want to do something just because everyone else is. They don’t realize just how useful social media can be and how valuable it can be to them and their career.
Hi Kimberly!
Mobile apps can be a life saver!
Right! They don’t want to be just following the crowd. Which can be a good thing. People need to be motivated in order to join in with social media and if they feel like they’re doing it because they’re pressured into it, then they won’t like nor care about social media and the benefits.
Thanks for the comment!
Twitter suspended my account after one day of creating it. That makes me Hate Twitter all the more! I was given no reason. I pretty sure I didn’t do anything to warrant this action.
I see it as a bad omen to just stay away from Twitter.
